Tapping Into Catchments

Newsletter 1 Term 3 2009

Welcome to the first edition of our electronic newsletter developed jointly by North East Water (NEW) and the North East Catchment Management Authority (NECMA).

We bring you this newsletter to help improve our communication about water education in the North East of Victoria but to also keep you informed on the latest water education news & events relavant to your school.

Tapping into Catchments is a new partnership between North East Water and the North East CMA and brings together the resources and local expertise of both organisations. Tapping into Catchments will provide educators with a variety of tools and resources to engage students in a range of contexts relating to water and our local catchments. This newsletter is one component of the project and will be distributed at the beginning of each school term  - keeping  you up to date on upcoming events, competitions, resources, grants, funding information and lots more...relating to water.

A School Survey has also been developed and sent out to all schools in the region. The purpose of this survey is to ensure we have a record of your previous involvement in our programs and current contact details for your school. All surveys were sent to the school principal and should be completed in conjunction with the relevant teacher. Please complete the survey with as much detail as possible and return it back to Waterwatch as soon as possible.

All the best for Term 3 and we look forward to working with you.

From the team at Tapping into Catchments

Carolyn Humby from Waterwatch & Diane Doyle from North East Water

School Environment Education Directory

The School Environment Education Directory project (SEED) is continuing to grow and links to over 400 existing online sustainability curriculum resources. The information on the website is easy to use and relates to the topics of biodiversity, climate change, general sustainability, waste and water. The website also contains local information including contacts, excursion locations and curriculum units created by local environment staff.

North East Water and Waterwatch have created 12 curriculum water units linking directly to VELS and with a North East focus. These units of work will assist the teacher in delivering lessons within their own classroom and also provide the relevant links and additional information needed to cover that unit of work.

The SEED website is located on the North East Catchment Management Authority website - www.necma.vic.gov.au/seed
